How to copy faint documents?

I have old faxes and old 3 part carbonless forms which are totally faded. It used to be you could put a transparent colored plastic on top and then the copy would come out with legible writing. I am not sure if the colored plastic was yellow or blue? Can anyone help me? I do NOT have an adjustable light to darker facility on my printer.
